Carl Perkins was an accomplished songwriter, so much so that it was directly responsible for getting him a contract with Sun Records in the first place. Indeed, it is said that the reason Sam Phillips was prepared to sell Elvis Presley’s contract to RCA was because he thought Carl was a much more all-round entertainer. Blue Suede Shoes is perhaps his best known song but there were plenty more that flowed from his pen. Which makes it somewhat surprising that Whole Lotta Shakin’ contains cover versions of material made famous by others, with an abundance of rock and roll material contained within. It’s an interesting album but, with one or two originals, could have been even better. That said, Carl Perkins was as much a rock and roller as Little Richard, Bill Haley and Gene Vincent, and then some. He also helped define rockabilly, making Carl one of the key artists of the 1950s.
