An album that came about almost by accident, Empathy is a recording that has captured the imagination of both Shelly Manne and Bill Evans fans alike. It would appear that Shelly Manne & His Men were scheduled to perform at the Village Vanguard in New York sharing the bill with the Bill Evans Trio. The opportunity of getting a recording that featured two of the hottest names in jazz was too good to miss, with producer Creed Taylor obtaining permission from Riverside for Bill Evans to participate in the recording (not surprisingly, Bill Evans would make a more permanent switch to Verve some time later). The trio was rounded out by bass player Monte Budwig from Shelly Manne’s group. Bill Evans in particular flourished in the new setting, putting in as series of performances that were lighter, freer and more relaxed than his efforts in the immediate few years. The overall effect is of three musicians, all at the top of their game, having an enjoyable time performing outside their normal comfort zones.
