Jimmie Rodgers’ eponymous debut album, released in 1957, also turned out to be his most successful, peaking at #15 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. It helped that the album contained no fewer than two Top Ten hits, including a number one smash in Honeycomb, making Jimmie one of the Roulette label’s biggest sellers at the time. He would remain at Roulette for some five years before signing with Dot, although there were rumours that Roulette arranged for Jimmy to be attacked and hospitalised in 1967 in retaliation for him leaving the label! Whilst the album struggled to make much of an impact in the UK (where the chart was restricted to just five places!), it remained a popular item in his catalogue for many a year. Similarly, although his hits have made sporadic appearances on compilations and the such since original release, there is much on this album that is getting a rare outing. For a brief spell, Jimmie Rodgers was one of the brightest stars at Roulette; here’s the reason why.
