Sonny Rollins’ second album after his return from a self-imposed musical exile, What’s New found the saxophonist exploring the bossa nova, although true to form he provided his own take on the musical style that was sweeping across America. The resulting album found Sonny working in two distinct settings; as part of a quartet with the legendary guitarist Jim Hall, bass player Bob Crenshaw and drummer Ben Riley, and then as part of a basic trio with Cranshaw and percussionist Candido. There’s also a vocal chorus that interacts with the musicians on Brown Skin Gal, something of a calypso workout. Whilst many of his contemporaries had pursued bossa nova in an attempt to achieve commercial acceptance, Sonny rarely strayed from his bop and avant garde roots, making this one of the more interesting excursions into bossa. As one might expect, the level of performance is exceptional throughout.
