That Horace Parlan even managed to play the piano is something of a minor miracle, for a bout of polio whilst he was still a child left him with a partially crippled right hand. In order to compensate he developed a powerful left hand and evolved a distinctive style that set him out from the rest of the pack. Having worked with the likes of Sonny Stitt and Charles Mingus, Horace was signed by Blue Note in 1960 and recorded a total of seven albums over the next three years. Us Three, the second of those albums, features Horace with bassist George Tucker and drummer Al Harewood in a trio that had already established something of a veritable reputation through its performances at Minton’s. Horace wrote three of the album’s seven tracks, revealing him to be a much more melodic player than his hard bop spells with Lou Donaldson and Charles Mingus might otherwise suggest. Horace Parlan and his trio may have been vastly under-rated and appreciated, but this is cool soul-jazz at its very best.
