A hugely talented and popular trumpeter, Booker Little seemingly had the jazz world at his feet when he first broke onto the scene in 1958. After a spell with Max Roach (Booker would appear on seven of Roach’s albums) Booker recorded four as leader of his own group, all of which attracted considerable attention and acclaim. By 1961 Booker was barely 23 years of age and was being touted as one of the jazz finds of the century, with all manner of fellow artists keen to promote his talents. His untimely death from uremia later the same year brought that talent to a sudden halt, and his passing was mourned by many. His all too brief repertoire has been highly praised in the years since, with Out Front consistently regarded as the finest of his career. Featuring assistance from Max Roach, Eric Dolphy and Julian Priester, it is a solid statement of intent and a delight from start to finish.
