Whilst Sue Thompson forged a hugely successful career during the 1970s as a country singer, it should be remembered that her first breakthrough came thanks to a succession of pop hits, most usually from the pen of John D Loudermilk. Born in Nevada, Missouri, Sue was singing and playing guitar live from the age of seven, even getting an early television appearance whilst still a child. After two marriages, she landed her first solo recording contract with Mercury in 1950, albeit with little success. Instead her career was maintained thanks to touring with Dude Martin (her second husband) and then hosting a television show and working Las Vegas with Hank Penny (her third husband). Her recording career finally began to take off when she signed with Hickory Records in 1960, with her versions of Sad Movies (Make Me Cry) and Norman, both written by John D Loudermilk both making the Top 5 and selling more than a million copies. The resulting album, Meet Sue Thompson sold well without ever troubling the chart, but it provides a perfect home for her two breakthrough hits. Even fifty years after their original release, Sue was still being asked to perform them when she appeared live!
