One of the understated heroes of jazz, Stanley Turrentine achieved some degree of success during the 1970s with a series of pop crossover albums for the CTI label, but his earlier jazz output is well worth seeking. He signed with Blue Note in 1960, largely on the back of his work with Jimmy Smith, and soon began work on his own recordings with his future wife Shirley Scott. Of the more than twenty albums he was to record for the label, Dearly Beloved is rightfully regarded as one of the best, with the choice of compositions being matched by the expert musicianship displayed by Stanley (tenor saxophone), Shirley (organ) and Roy Brooks (drums).
