Devised by Michael Codron and Paddy Stone, Pieces Of 8 opened at the Apollo Theatre in London on 23 September 1959 and would run for a total of 429 performances. If the revue did much to further enhance the already growing reputations of stars Kenneth Williams and Fenella Fielding, it also announced the arrival of a major new talent on the scene, that of writer Peter Cook. His quirky style, later to land him his own television series with Dudley Moore, is best exemplified by Not An Asp, brilliantly delivered by Williams and something of a standout among the 14 tracks represented on this album.
