A teen idol and one of the most popular singers of the 1950s, Eddie Fisher enjoyed his greatest success in the pre-Rock and Roll era. Born in Philadelphia on 10 August 1928 to Russian Jewish immigrants he entered various amateur talent contests at a young age and won most, going on to perform on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts television show. By 1946 he was singing with the bands of Buddy Morrow and Charlie Ventura and in 1949 linked with Eddie Cantor, subsequently performing on Cantor’s radio show. This earned him a solo contract with RCA the same year, the start of a musical career that would see him register 35 Top 40 American hits in a little over six years, including two that hit the top spot in the UK. If in later years Eddie became more notorious for his marriages (married five times, his wives include Debbie Reynolds, Elizabeth Taylor and Connie Stevens) and offspring (his daughter by Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher, later became a star of the original Star Wars films), then we ignore his hit laden musical career at our peril.
