Written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II and based on the novel by Edna Ferber, Show Boat takes the theme of the novel depicting life on the Mississippi and intersperses it with issues such as unhappy marriages and racial prejudice. The story is set over almost fifty years and focuses on the life of Magnolia Hawks, whose father owns the show boat Cotton Blossom, and gambler Gaylord Ravenal. The pair fall in love after meeting on the Cotton Blossom and eventually marry and move to Chicago. The pair separate when Gaylord loses all of their money gambling. Originally staged at the Ziegfried Theatre in 1927, the show ran for 572 performances and has been successfully revived on numerous occasions over the ensuing seventy eight years. The show was first transferred to the silver screen in 1936 and more successfully revisited in 1951.
