Gene Vincent is rightly regarded as one of the pioneers of rock and roll, with hits such as Be Bop A Lula as fresh and exciting today as they were when originally released. Yet Gene's hit career was a relatively short one either side of the Atlantic - just five hit singles in an eighteen month period commencing in the summer of 1956 in America, and eight Top 40 singles over the space of five years in the UK. His influence on the genre therefore is due to more than just his recording career. It was as a live performer that Gene found his greatest success, particularly in Europe. It was whilst touring the UK that he suffered serious injuries in a car crash in April 1960, the same crash that claimed the life of tourmate Eddie Cochran. Although only one of his albums ever made the charts, the seven or so he recorded before the sixties are all vital and exciting releases, with Bluejean Bop the album that effectively made his reputation in the UK.
