American male singer born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania on 18/5/1912 (real name Pierino Como) his original profession was as a barber (he owned a barbershop in his hometown) and was dubbed the ‘singing barber’ when he made his breakthrough. He began singing in 1933 with the Freddy Carlone band and then moved on to Ted Weems in 1936. After six years with Weems he launched his own solo career and became one of the most popular singers of the era, with his success proving enduring enough for him to continue to score hits in the UK into the 1970s. He also made a number of films, including 'Something For The Boys', 'Doll Face' and 'Words And Music'. He launched his own TV show that ran from 1948 until 1963. Perry received the very first American gold disc for 'Catch A Falling Star', which was presented on 14th March 1958. He died in his sleep on 12/5/2001.
