Gene Krupa is regarded as something of a patron saint of drummers, being responsible for establishing the full drum kit on modern recordings. According to legend, the engineers at his first recording session were aghast when he set up his equipment - every other jazz band only ever used snare drums and cymbals, yet here was Gene setting up assorted cymbals, bass drums and snare drums. He played them with energy and flamboyancy, two traits that perhaps best described Gene away from the world of music. It is no surprise that The Who's own drummer Keith Moon cited Gene Krupa as a major influence on his own career - Gene Krupa was the Keith Moon of his generation! Here's Gene's master opus with Benny Goodman, 'Sing! Sing! Sing!', plus a generous selection of top items from Krupa's own hugely popular band including the top 10 smash 'Let Me Off Uptown' featuring vocals by the multi-talented Roy Eldridge and the sublime Anita O'Day.
